Festive Playlist: My Top 5 Christmas Songs

Britmums challenged bloggers to come up with a festive playlist that will keep them or their Designated Driver smiling this season while they taxi friends and family around. I love Christmas and I love music, so here are my top 5 Christmas songs together with an explanation why I love them so much!

1. Fairytale of New York – The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl

I keep telling myself that I like this song because of this part:

“I´ve got a feeling
This year´s for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
Where all our dreams come true”

However it seems that I join in and sing even louder when they are swearing at each other. It’s quite weird, because I don’t usually swear, so maybe I use this song to let it all out? Who knows? But I really like this song!

2. Santa Claus is Coming to Town – Jackson 5

“He sees you when you’re sleeping
He knows when you’re awake
He knows if you’ve been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake”

I love singing this song for my little boy. I start singing it from November so little man is aware that Santa is watching everything that he does. No, I’m not being mean, just making the most of such a lovely song! Somehow it works incredibly well… I wonder why!

3. Santa Baby – Eartha Kitt

“Santa baby, I wanna yacht,
And really that’s not a lot,
Been an angel all year,
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight”

I really see myself as an angel (yes, really!), check out the name of my blog “Lilinha Angel’s World”. So I have definitely been an angel all year. I want a convertible, I want an yacht, I want an iPad, I want a mansion, I want so many things, and “really that’s not a lot” – I can dream! After all, I have been a good girl and Santa will be reading my list!

4. Driving Home for Christmas – Chris Rea

“Driving home for Christmas
Oh, I can’t wait to see those faces
I’m driving home for Christmas,
Well I’m moving down that line
And it’s been so long
But I will be there
I sing this song
To pass the time away
Driving in my car
Driving home for Christmas”

Nothing better than being at home during the festive season and this song simply says that. It is a simple and straight forward message and it always brings a tear to my eye, it’s a tear of joy. It was so exciting when we went to Brazil for Christmas a couple of years ago. We didn’t drive there (obviously), but it felt like we were driving home for Christmas. It was so emotional being back home for Christmas as the last Christmas I spent in Brazil was in 2002, so eight years later I went back for the festive season and it was simply magical!

5. All I Want For Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey

“I don’t want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don’t care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own”

I have always preferred company to presents, so this song pretty much sums up what I want for Christmas. I want to have my family close to me so we can share fine food and wine, watch Christmas movies and be happy! It means much more than gifts or anything else. As long as I have my family beside me, it will be a very happy Christmas!
