We have been buying books for little man since he was a baby. Actually, thinking about it, I bought a book for him as soon as I found out I was pregnant. We started his book collection from an early age and, as a result, he loves reading stories.

We were sent a lovely hardback children’s book: Disney 365 Stories for Boys (RRP £12.99, on sale for £4.99).

I loved the idea that it has a Disney story for every day of the year. Sometimes we struggle to pick a book, either little man chooses to read the same story for several days or it takes ages for him to pick one. It’s very handy having a specific story for each day.

The Works is looking to promote the benefits of reading books over watching screens, they say:

“Save yourself cash by buying books for your children instead of the latest expensive computer games and gadgets, there is evidence to suggest that reading books is actually better for young children’s development than watching screens (more here).

The Works has interviewed professionals in the field, including children’s literacy expert, Dr Sandra Williams, and the National Literacy Trust, to establish the benefits of reading books.

Dr Sandra Williams said: “Reading a book, together with the tactile turning of the page is pleasurable and a good picture book has qualities that may not be found in electronic media. What is important is the construction of the child and many good quality picture books invite active participation and involvement. Significantly the authors/illustrators leave gaps for the readers to fill. There is a tension between text and picture which invites consideration.”

The Works hopes that the printed book will survive the digital revolution. Reading doesn’t provide ready-made answers; it leaves room for imagination and extended periods of focus. This is increasingly important in today’s multi-media world, in which the over-abundance of information can be heavily distracting.

Conal Presho, Head of Development at the National Literacy Trust, agrees: “Only time will tell if print books will be excluded from children’s reading altogether, although it seems unlikely…there is an inherent value in a book as a physical item, particularly when given as a present. We are also very aware that print books are currently much more accessible to those from disadvantaged backgrounds and printed books can be more easily shared or passed on from child to child.”

After reading this, I was determined to spend more time reading with little man. We already read a bedtime story every night, however we can read more by watching less TV. That’s exactly what we have been doing and we’ve been having lots of fun.

Disney 365 Stories for Boys features colourful artwork and original Disney and Disney-Pixar stories. This wonderful story collection for Boys has a different story for every day of the year. Each story is a page long with a picture in the centre of the page.

Reading is so much Fun!
Reading is so much Fun!

I have noticed that there are seasonal stories. As an example, on 1st January is “New Year’s Day” and on 25th December “A Merry Christmas” story.

All the favourite Disney characters are included from Aladdin and Cars to Peter Pan and Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse and Simba to Pinocchio, Woody and Buzz, and many more.

We have been enjoying our time together reading and somehow I feel closer to little man. I have noticed that he’s developed a lot in the past few weeks, he’s becoming quite clever! Bless my little boy!

We have always enjoyed reading books, but now we like it even more! Moving forward, we will be spending less time watching time and more time reading books.

Disney 365 Stories is also available for girls.
