Retired Greyhounds

Little man has said a few times that he wants a doggie, but then I always remember that dogs are not just for Christmas. They should be well look after throughout their lives from puppy until they go to dogs’ heaven.

Greyhounds are fairly used for coursing and competitive races, however I have always wondered what happened to them once they are no longer fit to race.

SSE has an interesting volunteering project named “Community at Heart” in which staff have the chance to support a local community, organisation or charity out of their working time.

I think it’s a great project, not only employees are given the opportunity to give something back to society, but also volunteering groups benefit from their skills and expertise at no cost.

The video below shows SSE employees helping at Greyhound Rescue Fife which has retired greyhounds up for adoption.

Once racing greyhounds reach the end of their career, they are no longer wanted so they are sheltered and looked after by at Greyhound Rescue Fife. Around 30,000 greyhounds need new homes each year and they can rehome 100 of them.

It is refreshing to see a company giving back to the community. In case you are interested and need some helping hands, you can contact SSE at volunteering@sse.com
