South African Apples and Pears
A few months ago, I was sent some South African Stone Fruits, peaches, plums and nectarines, and made a lovely peach compote, which we had with pancakes and also spiced rice pudding.
South Africa, Beautiful Country, Beautiful Fruit, sent me a gorgeous hamper with South African Apples and Pears, together with a note: “Good Morning from sunny South Africa! Enjoy breakfast on us this morning, with a selection of fresh apples and pears from South Africa, to accompany your cup of English tea”.
South African apples and pears are mainly grown in the Western Cape. The region is famous for being the most bountiful fruit-growing region in the country. South African apples and pears are available from March to October and some of the particularly varieties include Gala and Golden Delicious apples, and Forelle and Williams pears.
I must say we all enjoyed the South African apples and pears, they were very sweet and tasty. I was pleased to find out that by buying South African fruit, you are helping to create jobs, support families and develop the country. Each hectare of fruit planted creates approximately one full-time job, and every South African fruit worker supports, on average, a family of four.
When you buy South African apples and pears, not only you taste juicy and delicious fruits, but you also help the country, as a whole, the South African fruit industry provides almost half a million jobs.
