Book: Reasons My Kid is Crying by Greg Pembroke
I love reading books, especially ones that make me laugh while talking about issues that I might identify myself with. Motherhood has completely changed my life, I love being a mum and having a little someone around, however we all know that it is not an easy ride. Kids have a mind of their own, and most of the time it is nearly impossible to figure out what they are feeling, and what has triggered a particular behaviour.
Little man is a lovely little boy, he is good most of the time (98%), however I must confess that sometimes I have no idea why he is crying or whinging. He is four and a half, he is able to speak and explain himself, so when I try and understand what is going on during a meltdown, he simply replies: “I don’t know”.

I have recently come across a book called Reasons my Kid is Crying, which was published following the success of the blog Reasons My Son is Crying, which went viral earlier this year. It all started when father Greg Pembroke posted pictures online of his three-year-old son, mid-tantrum, alongside the reason he was crying: He had broken his bit of cheese in half.
The book features toddlers from around the world in the midst of apocalyptic meltdowns. It collects together photos sent to Greg from parents documenting the many, completely logical reasons why small children cry, such as ‘I let him play on the grass’, ‘He tried on his new glasses’, and ‘The neighbour’s dog isn’t outside’.
We all have been there once or twice, or even daily, when we are trying to understand why our children are crying and it is over something so small, that we need to try not to laugh at the whole situation.

Little man and I read ‘Reasons my kid is crying’ together, I wanted to see his reaction and his thoughts on why other children were sad. Although the book is over 150 pages long, it has a picture and one or two lines per page, so you can actually read the whole book in a couple of hours. Once you start reading it, you won’t stop until you reach the end as it is funny and catchy. You will enjoy looking at lovely photos of children accompanied by the short description why they are crying.
Little man giggled at most of them, including ‘He wanted to eat more dirt’, to which he replied ‘But we can’t eat dirt mummy’. One of his favourite photos was of a baby with food all over him ‘He decided to rub mashed potatoes in his eyes’. Ever since we read the book, I’ve noticed that little man stops just before starting to cry over something silly – maybe it’s because I told him that I’ve got my phone ready and waiting to take a photo of his next meltdown to send to Greg!
Great book, highly recommended. Whenever I want a laugh, I just pick it up and read a few pages. I’ve noticed that little man keeps reading it too and giggling to himself.
Reasons My Kid is Crying retails at £9.99, however I’ve noticed it is on sale on Amazon for £5.00.
