Spanish Persimon: Lovely Treat!
While we were away on holiday, a surprise delivery arrived and our neighbours kindly kept it safe for us until our return. We were sent a lovely basket full of sweet Spanish Persimon on Halloween, no trick or treat, just a lovely treat!
In 2012, nearly 12 million persimmon were sold in the UK, compared to just a few thousand five years ago, making it the fastest growing exotic fruit in the supermarkets. Spanish Persimon is available from mid-October to January, it has a sweet and delicate flavour, similar to a peach or mango.

Persimon reminds me of my childhood, I used to have caqui (that’s what we call it in Portuguese) when I was in Brazil, I would called it “sweet tomato”. My little boy tried for the first time last year when we spent Christmas in France, he loved it, so he was very happy when our samples of Spanish Persimon arrived.
I was planning on making a dessert or bake a cake with it, but I didn’t even have the chance to look for recipes. As soon as we picked up the delivery from our neighbours, we sliced one to try, and by the time we saw nearly half of it was gone. Persimon can be eaten straight from a fruit bowl like an apple by simply chopping into segments for a healthy lunchbox snack, you can also have it sliced into your morning cereal or served as an after-dinner treat.

Little man really likes Spanish Persimon, just as much as us, it is tasty and full of flavour. Spanish Persimon is packed with goodness, it is a good source of vitamin A and C and potassium, and it is high in antioxidant. It has no pips or stones, so it is really easy to sliced or you can just bite chunks off it. I haven’t seen Spanish Persimon in our local supermarket, but I will be looking out for it on our next shopping trip.
