Spring Has Sprung – It’s Time to Get Fit

Spring is the time of year when many people who want to get fit start to get serious about it. There’s no more excuse of it being too cold to be outside, as there was back in the New Year. And there’s no  good reason for your only involvement you have in sport being checking the World Cup winner odds on Betfair! It’s time for action!

Exercise - Walking

So, what’s the easiest way to improve your fitness? Well, the good news is that it’s something that is really simple. All you need to do is to start walking more regularly. Do you drive the kids to school when it’s only a ten minute walk? Set the alarm earlier and leave the house with twenty minutes so that the walk with the kids can be a leisurely one, but then when you’ve dropped them off, pick up the pace and take a longer route so that you get a 30 minute brisk walk on the way home.

There are all kinds of ways you can increase the amount of walking you do. If you take a regular bus ride, get off a few stops early. If you drive into town to shop, park in a car park that’s further out of the centre.

Exercise - Tennis Another way to improve your fitness is to learn how to play a new sport. In the UK, it’s amazing how many people pick up a tennis racket for the first time after watching the Wimbledon Championships on TV in June. Suddenly all those tennis courts you see abandoned in the parks for the majority of the year are booked up every evening and at the weekends, and the whole country goes tennis crazy for a few weeks.

But if you do the same and find that you really like playing, you can always find a local tennis club where you can have lessons and get to play year-round. And if the kids are inspired too, there are lots of mini tennis classes around the country.

If you want to use swimming to get fitter, though, you have to be prepared to get your hair wet and put your head under the water. An investment in a pair of goggles is also a good idea.

You don’t need to join a private gym to get fit. Many council-run leisure centres also offer a range of different exercise classes that are available on a pay per class basis. These include classes such as Kettlercise, Metafit, Body Tone, and Zumba. It’s good to try a few different classes to see which one suits you best.

Whether you go to a class or increase the amount of exercise you do on an almost incidental basis – like walking more often instead of driving the car – work on gradually increasing the exercise that you do and your fitness levels will soar.
