Building Our First Gingerbread House and Supporting The Great Gingerbread House Sale by Shelter
I always wanted to build a gingerbread house, but unfortunately it is not part of the Brazilian Christmas traditions. This Christmas, little man and I had the opportunity to decorate our first ever gingerbread house. It was a joint effort, I helped with the icing while little man did the decorating.
For our first attempt, we tried a gingerbread house kit from Aldi, with pre-built house, pre-made icing with tip, jelly hearts, pucker ups, pinwheels and mini beads.
The icing was easy to use and little man really enjoyed decorating the gingerbread house with the sweets provided. We also had fun making marshmallow snowmen, decorated with coloured icing.
We really enjoyed using the gingerbread house kit, and no wonder Aldi has sold enough gingerbread houses to measure the height of 20 London Shards, or 425 double-decker buses. The amount of gingerbread houses sold is also equal to 66 Big Ben’s, 40 Blackpool Tower’s or 1158 giraffes. In order to celebrate, Aldi created a giant replica of their gingerbread house in Manchester’s city centre. How cute does it look?!
If you are also building and decorating gingerbread houses with little ones this Christmas, I would recommend supporting The Great Gingerbread House Sale by Shelter. They are a charity that campaign for housing rights and fight against homelessness. Every 11 minutes, a family in Britain loses their home. Shelter provide advice and support, including a free helpline that’s open 365 days a year, so that no one faces bad housing or homelessness alone.
You can make a difference this Christmas by building and selling gingerbread houses to raise money for Shelter. There is also a competition, you simply need to share your creation to the Shelter website for the chance of winning prizes for your family: http://www.shelter.org.uk/the_great_gingerbread_house_sale/competition.
