Weird Christmas Traditions Quiz
I was brought up in Brazil, we usually gather the whole family together on Christmas eve and have a family feast. We also eat lots of panettone as part of our tradition, I have recently shared our experience learning to make panettone and getting into the Christmas spirit.
Now I live in England with my family and we celebrate the British traditions. On Christmas eve, we are looking forward to leaving some milk and mince pies for Santa by our Christmas tree, and a carrot for Rudolf the reindeer.
How well do you know your Christmas traditions? Do you know how other European countries celebrate Christmas?
I must confess that I had now idea until I read an interesting article on Expedia blog: ‘Top Five Quirky Christmas Customs from Across Europe’. I have recently found out a few weird Christmas traditions and those are my favourite:
My favourite weird tradition is Krampus, part of Austrian Christmas tradition. I would think Krampus was more appropriate for Halloween than Christmas, but the hairy ram-horned devil with a basket on his back takes naughty children straight to hell.
No wonder Austrian kids are so well behaved!
My second favourite Christmas tradition is Caga Tió in Catalonia. I speak Spanish, so I had a giggle as soon as I read it, the translation is pooping log. Children feed the smiling hollowed out log with a Christmas hat with fruits, nuts and chocolates from the beginning of December. On Christmas Day, kids hit Caga Tió with a stick and hope the log will leave them a present. There is even a hilarious song:
“Poop Log, poop turron,
Hazelnuts and cottage cheese.
If you don’t poop well,
I’ll hit you with a stick,
Poop Log”
Now that I’ve shared some weird Christmas traditions, it should be easy to take the quiz. Can you separate real traditions from fake ones and beat my score of 5 correct answers out of 7?
If you feel inspired by the weird Christmas traditions, you could book a holiday on Expedia and check out those traditions for yourself!
