Getting Fit: Shopping for Healthy Meals on a Budget

I must say I am very proud of all the small changes we made to our lifestyle and diet over the past few weeks. It is much more than a New Year’s Resolution, it is all about changing old habits, being healthier and more active.

Ever since my first 5k run, I’ve been running most days, and I love it. Hubby is getting active at football, while little man goes swimming and karate. As you can see, we are quite active, so we need nutritious and balanced meals to keep our energy levels high during our busy days.

Aldi Challenge: Fruit Basket for under £10

This January, Aldi has launched #AldiChallenge, which is all about swapping your old blue January for a fun Aldi January. The aim is to get everyone eating as well as they can, on a low budget, but still enjoying themselves with healthy budget-friendly meals.

I went to my local Aldi for our weekly shopping and I must say I was very impressed with the selection of fruit and vegetables on offer. I filled up our fruit basket for less than £10, I bought strawberries (£1.49), tangerines (£1.59), apples (£1.29), conference pears (£1.19), plums (69p), bananas (69p), blueberries (£1.19) and grapes (£1.49).

I also bought healthy snacks such as dried fruit and nuts, vegetables, salads, meat and fish for the week ahead. The infusion salmon fillets were prepared as soon as we got home. I loved the fact they were marinated in flavoursome herbs and spices, making them very handy and delicious too!

The whole family was very impressed with our healthy Sunday roast on a budget, for only £7.43. We had specially selected outdoor bread British pork leg joint (£4.37), sweet potato (59p), onions (59p), parsley 89p) and vegetable medley (99p).

Instead of roasted potatoes, we had a delicious sweet potato and onion mash with parsley, which complemented the roast pork and mixed vegetables. The meal was enjoyed with red wine onion gravy. Yummy and healthy!

Aldi has a Super 6 offer each week, in which 6 fruit and vegetables are at a special price of 59p each. This week, you will find sweet potato, red onions, swede, baking potatoes, Chantenay carrots and parsnips. Great selection, perfect for winter warming stews, casseroles and soups.

I must say I really enjoyed our weekly shopping at Aldi, and the fact it was affordable to buy healthy food on a budget. Our weekly shopping cost £70, and when I got home I used the online grocery shopping at my usual supermarket to check the items on the Aldi receipt. I was pleasantly surprised when I found that it would cost me over £15 more to buy equivalent products at a leading supermarket.

Now that I found the way to Aldi, which is only a 10 minute drive away, I will be returning more often for our weekly shopping and great savings! You can also brighten up your old January with #AldiChallenge. For more information, please check: https://www.aldichallenge.co.uk/
