Quick Tips for Surviving Parenthood
Being a modern parent isn’t easy. Juggling a dozen things at once takes the reactions of a cat and the calmness of a Zen master, but sometimes you need a little help: even if it’s in the form of some guidance. Unfortunately, we can’t be there to catch anything that falls, but we can give you some simple things you need to know before you enter the world of parenthood.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask
One of the most important skills a new parent can learn is to ask for help. Despite what you might think, seeking the advice and support of others when you’re a new parent isn’t a sign of weakness. In fact, it’s actually the sign of a confident and competent parent.
If you do plan on asking for help there are two things you need to remember: there are no stupid questions and make sure you trust the person you’re asking. It doesn’t matter how petty or trivial you think it is, there are no questions you shouldn’t ask. Even if you know the answer a fresh perspective on the situation could open your eyes to new possibilities.
Finally, if you’re seeking advice, make sure the person you’re asking is trustworthy. A family member with children of their own is usually the best place to start.
Learn to Drive
Cars can be a lifeline for the modern parent, but before you get behind the wheel and put you and your child at risk you need to know the rules of the road. Make sure you do your homework and take some mock theory tests online before you sit the real exam.
Once you’ve earned your stripes and then passed your practical, you’ll be the proud owner of licence for unlimited potential. Being a parent that can drive doesn’t have to mean simple trips to the local shop. When your child is upset or looking for something to do, then a car journey can be the answer to all your woes.
A quick spin round the block to send baby to sleep or an impromptu day out for an unruly toddler, cars might be a luxury in life but for the stressed parent they can be a lifeline. However, if you are thinking about taking your test and getting a licence, make sure you remain safe at all times when you’re on the road.
Manage Meals and Get Some Rest
The physical and emotional development of your child depends on two key things: food and rest. Although it can be tempting to silence and whinging child with a sugary treat, you shouldn’t give into this temptation. Exposing your child to unhealthy foods at an early age doesn’t bode well for later life, let alone their immediate health.
Introduce fruit and vegetables as early as possible but do it in a subtle way. Make fresh meals such as soups and stews that contain lots of veg. Masking the vegetables can be a great way to introduce your child to new flavours which will make it more likely they’ll enjoy them in later life.
The final thing you need to remember as a new parent, is rest. Both for yourself and your child, sleep is crucial. Although the formative years will be a battle when it comes to sleep, you need to set a strict routine early. If you can establish this when your child is very young is can be a lot easier to get them into bed when they’re older.
Being a new parent is tough, but if you can take note of some of the simple steps we’ve outlined in this article, we’re certain that you’ll do a fantastic job.
