Now that schools are back, it is essential that children are well hydrated and healthy to achieve their full potential. Studies have shown that children who drink a litre of water throughout the school day have improved short-term memory and better performance.

I must put my hand up and confess that I don’t always have enough water, even though I know I should, and little man doesn’t have either. He doesn’t usually ask for a drink, so I need to remind him to have water during the day.

Did you know that children should drink more water in relation to their body size than adults? When I found out that children should also drink between six to eight glasses of water daily, I was surprised and knew straight away that I would have to find ways of increasing little man’s water intake.

 Add water at mealtimes

Whether we are having a meal at home or a picnic outdoors, I make sure little man has water available. Highland Spring bottles are convenient and perfect to take out in picnics.

I’ve noticed that he will have it if it is in front of him. Did you know that water at mealtimes can help children tolerate vegetables?

Drink water while being active

Little man is very active and loves running, cycling and jumping. I ensure he has a bottle of water next to him, so he can have sips while he is being active. By the time I notice, he has already finished the bottle and is asking for more.

Add water to lunchboxes and backpacks

Instead of packing juices and other drinks, it’s best to include a bottle of water as water is the best way to keep hydrated. It is free of sugar, sweeteners, colouring and calories.

Be a role model

I’ve started drinking more water and encouraging little man to have sips of water throughout the day. I have noticed that he reaches for his bottle of water whenever I have a sip of mine. By increasing my water intake, he has also increased his!
