Getting Fit: My First 5k Run!

I surprised myself this evening by completing my first ever 5k run!

After Christmas, I’ve noticed that I was not as fit as I used to be when I was feeling tired by walking up the escalators on the tube. My energy levels were low and I knew something had to be done.

Two weeks ago I’ve decided to shake off the cobwebs from my trainers and join the gym. It was just before New Year’s, so I don’t think I can say it’s my New Year’s resolution. The first day at the gym was a bit of a disaster, I could only run for around 2 minutes, then I had to stop as I was very tired and out of breath. The second day was a bit better, and by the third day I was run for ten minutes.

Last week, I noticed that I had more energy during the day, and could run for longer on the treadmill. I started increasing the duration and speed each day.

When I finished work today, I decided to try the 5k setting on the treadmill and was very happy – and surprised – that I managed to complete it. It took me 33 minutes to do a 5k run and I wasn’t tired afterwards.

I am feeling very positive at the moment and very proud of myself. It seems that I caught the running bug, and I love it. I really enjoy running while listening to my favourite songs and I have decided to start a new feature on the blog.

From now, I will be sharing my fitness tips on the ‘getting fit’ feature, together with suggestions on how to get fit and enjoy an active lifestyle while juggling full-time work, motherhood and family life. I look forward to sharing my journey with you and please feel free to share your fitness journey and tips too.

Do you enjoy running? What are your fitness tips?
